Laboratory glassware should be selected according to what the vessel must measure, contain, mix or store. A beaker is convenient for handling liquids, while volumetric flasks and pipettes are designed for work that requires defined volumes.
Accuracy classifications and calibration markings matter when measurements feed into analytical results. Graduated cylinders offer practical volume estimation, whereas Class A volumetric ware is generally chosen for more exact quantitative preparation.
Chemical and thermal compatibility are equally important. Borosilicate glass is widely used because it tolerates many laboratory reagents and temperature changes, but the specific chemical, heating method and pressure conditions must still be reviewed.
Before use, inspect glassware for chips, scratches and damaged graduations. Cleaning methods should suit both the residue and the glassware, and volumetric items should be handled in ways that preserve their calibration.
